110 years of Foot-bed Comfort

The Birkenstock family from Bad Honnef in Germany have been shoemakers since 1774.  In 1897, Konrad Birkenstock developed the first custom-made shoe with a contoured insole, and a flexible arch support to be inserted in factory-made shoes.  The family started exporting the arch supports to other countries in Europe during the 1920s and in 1964, Karl Birkenstock developed the first Birkenstock sandal.

Birkenstock exploded as an international brand in the late 1960s when an American – Margot Fraser – came across the sandal in Germany, became convinced of its health benefits and started selling it in the US.  The sandals set a major trend, with Birkenstock shops opening all over America.

The Birkenstock sandal is now a ‘comfort icon’ with wide recognition among consumers.  Like other hugely successful shoes, it has created a magic combination of health, comfort, individuality and accessible styling.

Birkenstock shoes and sandals are made up of high quality materials and a unique construction to give durable comfort and long lasting good looks. Each contour in a Birkenstock foot-bed is precisely placed to stretch, flex and move naturally. Your feet benefit from free movement, constant exercise and improved circulation, resulting in long lasting comfort.  The sandals are still manufactured in Germany.  They are made from natural, renewable materials – cork, latex rubber, jute and leather – using environmentally sound solvent free and energy efficient processes.
